Day 3Oct 7, 2024: Alma Observatory, Salar de Atacama (B, L, D)

ALMA is situated on the Chajnantor Plateau at an elevation of around 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) above sea level. The high altitude and dry conditions of the Atacama Desert make it an ideal location for observing the universe in millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. ALMA is an international collaboration involving Europe, North America, East Asia, and the Republic of Chile. It is designed to observe and study the universe at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths, providing insights into a wide range of astronomical phenomena. It consists of an array of 66 high-precision antennas that work together as a single telescope. The antennas are movable and can be arranged in different configurations, allowing scientists to achieve different levels of resolution for their observations. ALMA is used to study a variety of celestial objects and phenomena, including protoplanetary disks, star formation, galaxy evolution, and the cosmic microwave background. Its ability to observe at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths allows astronomers to investigate cold objects in space, such as dust and gas clouds, with unprecedented detail.

We will continue to Salar de Atacama, also known as the Atacama Salt Flat, is one of the largest salt flats in Chile and is located near the town of San Pedro de Atacama. It is situated in the Atacama Desert, which is considered one of the driest places on Earth. It covers an area of about 3,000 square kilometers (1,200 square miles). The salt flat contains various minerals, including lithium, potassium, and magnesium. It is a significant source of lithium, which is an important component in batteries.Within the salt flat, there are several lagoons, including Laguna Chaxa, which is known for its flamingo populations. These lagoons create a striking contrast with the white expanse of the salt. The unique landscape of Salar de Atacama, with its vast salt crust, lagoons, and surrounding mountains, provides excellent opportunities for photography. Sunset and sunrise are particularly popular times for capturing the beauty of the salt flat.

We will return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4Oct 8, 2024: El Tatio Geysers, Valley de la Luna (B, L, D)
