Michael E. Bakich
Astronomer Lecturer

Michael has been fascinated with the stars all his life. His astronomical journey began in third grade, after his parents bought him a set of constellation flash cards. From that day forward, Michael’s goal was to become an astronomer.

He realized that goal in 1975, when he graduated with a degree in astronomy from the Ohio State University. Rather than continuing on a research-oriented track, Michael attended Michigan State University, where he received a Master of Arts in planetarium education (one of only six such degrees ever awarded) in 1977.

Michael previously worked in seven planetaria and has served as a consultant in the planetarium field. He joined the Astronomy magazine staff in February 2003. In addition to the hundreds of stories he’s written and edited for the magazine, Michael has authored 13 astronomy books, including four on total solar eclipses. Since 2013, he has been a member of the American Astronomical Society Total Solar Eclipse Task Force. Asteroid 131245 (Bakich) is named in his honor.

Because of his popular appeal, engaging style, and vast astronomical knowledge, Michael is a much sought after tour guide to eclipses, sky events, and historical astronomy sites. Michael has conducted tours to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, to several space shuttle launches, and a cruise to see the 1986 appearance of Halley’s Comet in Tahiti. Michael also has led a group to South Africa to observe the 2004 transit of Venus, and has headed up total solar eclipse expeditions to Mexico, Peru, Tahiti, Europe, Russia, China, Easter Island, Australia, and elsewhere.

Michael also enjoys observing celestial objects with a variety of telescopes, and he has logged thousands of hours at the eyepiece. He’s currently building his dream observatory in Tucson where he lives with his wife, Holley, who has earned degrees in fine arts and interior design.

David Eicher
Astronomer Lecturer

David John Eicher (born August 7, 1961, in Oxford, Ohio) is a prominent American editor, author, and science communicator, best known for his leadership in the field of astronomy. Eicher developed a passion for astronomy during his teenage years. At the age of 15, he founded Deep Sky Monthly, a magazine dedicated to deep sky observing, which laid the foundation for his future career in science communication. He pursued his higher education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1982, Eicher began his professional journey with Astronomy magazine as an assistant editor. Over the years, he advanced through various editorial roles, ultimately becoming the editor-in-chief in 2002 . Under his leadership, the magazine has continued to be a leading publication for astronomy enthusiasts worldwide. Eicher has authored, coauthored, or edited over 20 books on astronomy and science, including notable titles such as The New Cosmos: Answering Astronomy’s Big Questions, Comets! Visitors from Deep Space, and Mission Moon. He is also known for his engaging presentations and has spoken at institutions like Harvard University, the Starmus Festival, and the American Museum of Natural History In recognition of his contributions to astronomy, the International Astronomical Union named asteroid 3617 Eicher in his honor in 1990 .

Day 1July 30, Fri - 2027: Arrive in Luxor

Arrive in Luxor and arrange your own transfer to the hotel. The remainder of the day is free at leisure before the eclipse day. Overnight in Luxor.

Day 2July 31, Sat - 2027: Luxor East Bank [B, L]

Begin your Luxor tour with a visit to Luxor Temple, built by Pharaohs Amenhotep III and Ramses II. The temple was a key site for festivals, including the Opet Festival, which aimed to merge the ruler’s human and divine aspects. Luxor Temple was dedicated to Amun-Ra, whose marriage to Mut was celebrated annually during the festival.
Next, visit Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex ever built by man, representing the combined efforts of generations of ancient builders. Karnak is made up of three main temples dedicated to Amun, Mut, and Montu and is situated on 247 acres of land. Originally known as Ipet-Isut, meaning “The Most Sacred of Places,” it took over 1,300 years to complete.
Return to the hotel after the tour. Overnight in Luxor.

Day 3Aug 1, Sun - 2027: Luxor – Optional Hot Air Balloon and Dendera Temple [B]

Today, you have the option to choose between two exciting optional activities. You may participate in both or select one of the following tours:
• Option 1: Experience a breathtaking hot air balloon ride over Luxor for 45 minutes. Float over some of the world’s most significant archaeological sites, including the Valley of the Kings and Queens, as well as iconic historic monuments. During the flight, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Karnak and Luxor Temples, as well as the lush Nile Delta and surrounding farmlands. Refreshments will be provided.
• Option 2: Visit Dendera Temple, dedicated to the Goddess Hathor, known as the Goddess of Love. This temple, dating back to 125 B.C., is unique for its intact roof, where you can admire beautiful ceiling art depicting the hours of the day and night, as well as the journey of the sun, moon, and stars across the sky. One of the ceilings also features plaster casts of the signs of the zodiac. The temple also houses the only known relief of Queen Cleopatra and her son, Caesarian. Afterward, continue to Abydos, the ancient city dedicated to Osiris, God of the Underworld. You’ll visit the famous Temple of Seti I, completed by Ramses II.

Day 4Aug 2, Mon - 2027: Solar Eclipse Day - Luxor, Embarkation, Transfer to Nile Cruise [L, D]

After breakfast , take a short trip to Eclipse Center. We will be positioned exactly on the centerline of the longest total solar eclipse of the century. We have already reserved three exclusive viewing spots specifically for Eclipse Traveler passengers. Detailed location information will be shared during the welcome meeting at the Hilton Luxor Hotel by our Astronomers.

Day 5Aug 3, Tue - 2027: Luxor, West Bank Tour [B, L, D]

Explore the highlights of Luxor’s West Bank, including the Valley of the Kings, the temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon.
Return to the cruise to set sail to Edfu through the Esna Lock.

Day 6Aug 4, Wed - 2027: Edfu & Kom Ombo Temples [B, L, D]

Take a horse and carriage ride to visit the Temple of Horus at Edfu, one of the most intact temples in Egypt.
Set sail to Kom Ombo to visit the temple dedicated to both Horus and Sobek.
Sail to Aswan. Overnight in Aswan.

Day 7Aug 5, Thu - 2027: Aswan Tour [B, L, D]

Explore Aswan’s major sites, including the High Dam and the Temple of Philae.
Enjoy a traditional felucca sailboat ride around Elephantine Island.

Day 8Aug 6, Fri - 2027: Disembarkation – Abu Simbel (Optional) – Aswan (B)

After breakfast, disembark from your Nile cruise and begin your day in Aswan.
Today, you have the opportunity to join an optional excursion to the magnificent Abu Simbel Temples, one of Egypt’s most spectacular archaeological treasures. You may travel by air (approximately 1 hour 12 minutes each way) or by road (approximately 4 hours 20 minutes each way).
Guests who choose not to participate in the optional excursion will have free time to relax and enjoy the facilities at The Zen Wellness Resort, a beautiful luxury retreat overlooking the Nile River.
Please note: The Zen Wellness Resort is a dry hotel, meaning alcoholic beverages are not served anywhere on the property. However, guests are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages and enjoy them privately in the comfort of their guest rooms.

Day 9Aug 7, Sat - 2027: Aswan – Cairo – Pyramids, Memphis & Sakkara (B, L)

After breakfast, transfer to Aswan International Airport for your scheduled flight to Cairo.
Upon arrival, meet your Egyptologist guide and begin your exploration of the legendary Giza Plateau, home to the awe-inspiring Great Pyramids of Giza, the last remaining Wonder of the Ancient World. Marvel at the Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu), the largest of the three pyramids and one of mankind’s greatest architectural achievements.
Continue your visit to the iconic Great Sphinx, the mysterious limestone monument that has guarded the pyramids for thousands of years.
Enjoy lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant.
In the afternoon, travel to Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt founded by King Menes, who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Continue to Sakkara, the vast royal necropolis, where you will visit the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world’s oldest monumental stone structure, along with remarkable tombs dating back to the Old Kingdom.
Following your sightseeing, transfer to your hotel in Cairo.

Day 10Aug 8, Sun - 2027: Cairo City Tour [B, L]

Start with a guided tour of the Egyptian Museum, home to the treasures of King Tutankhamun, including over 1,700 items made of gold. You may also visit the Royal Mummies Room for an additional fee.
After lunch, explore Old Cairo, including the El Muallaqa Church (Suspended Church) and Ben Ezra Synagogue, which houses a Jewish Heritage Library.
Overnight in Cairo.

Day 11Aug 9, Mon - 2027: Alexandria Tour [B, L]

Take a day trip to Alexandria with your Egyptologist guide. Visit the National Museum, the Catacombs, and the Roman Amphitheater, dating back to the 2nd-4th centuries AD.
Explore the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (modern library) and see the Fort of Qaitbay from the outside, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria.
Return to Cairo.
Overnight in Cairo.

Day 12Aug 10, Tue - 2027: Cairo, Khan El Khalili, Citadel, and Leisure [B]

Visit the Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, the world’s largest 13th-century covered market. Explore the shops and enjoy bargaining for various goods.
Visit the Citadel of Mohamed Ali (Fortress of Salah al-Din), including the Alabaster Mosque, which offers stunning views of the city.
Return to the hotel by noon. The afternoon is free at leisure.

Final Payment Policy

If the final payment is not made within 7 days of the specified due date, Eclipse Traveler reserves the right to cancel your entire tour without any refund of payments already made. Final payments must be made exclusively via bank transfer; credit cards and checks are strictly not accepted.

Cancellation Terms:

Cancellations must be in writing by email, fax, or mail. Cancellation Penalties are as follows:

Booking date –August 1, 2023: 25% penalty
August 2, 2023 – August 2, 2024: 50% penalty
August 3, 2024– August, 3, 2025: 80% penalty
August 4, 2025 –Trip date: 100% penalty

Itinerary Changes:
The itinerary is subject to change due to alterations in local flight schedules, weather conditions, or other meteorological factors that may affect the visibility of the eclipse. Viewing a solar eclipse is inherently weather-dependent. In the event of unfavorable weather, Eclipse Traveler reserves the right to change the itinerary, re-route, or cancel the tour, while offering suitable alternatives to guests in a timely manner.
Flight Bookings:
We strongly advise all guests not to book or purchase international flight tickets without first consulting Eclipse Traveler staff, to avoid conflicts with potential itinerary changes.
Tour Pricing:
Eclipse Traveler reserves the right to increase pricing for upcoming Total Solar Eclipse tours if local partners at any destination raise their rates. Additionally, if local carriers impose new surcharges, it may impact the final cost of the tour.
