The Restaurant

The Grill

Soft breezes and island views beckon at the Grill, especially as the sun goes down, when guests gather at the outdoor bar for cocktails and tapas and talk about their day. Dining options include a choice of lighter fare as well as grilled favourites, fresh-from-the-oven pizza, and Silversea’s signature Hot Rocks concept which will enhance guests’ dining experiences, with Ecuadorian twists enhancing the offering further still. In the evening The Grill is transformed into an intimate, interactive eatery where diners can grill their own fresh seafood and prime cuts under a canopy of stars. David Eicher – Editor Emeritus

 

David John Eicher (born August 7, 1961, in Oxford, Ohio) is a prominent American editor, author, and science communicator, best known for his leadership in the field of astronomy.

Eicher developed a passion for astronomy during his teenage years. At the age of 15, he founded Deep Sky Monthly, a magazine dedicated to deep sky observing, which laid the foundation for his future career in science communication. He pursued his higher education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

In 1982, Eicher began his professional journey with Astronomy magazine as an assistant editor. Over the years, he advanced through various editorial roles, ultimately becoming the editor-in-chief in 2002 . Under his leadership, the magazine has continued to be a leading publication for astronomy enthusiasts worldwide.

Eicher has authored, coauthored, or edited over 20 books on astronomy and science, including notable titles such as The New Cosmos: Answering Astronomy’s Big Questions, Comets! Visitors from Deep Space, and Mission Moon. He is also known for his engaging presentations and has spoken at institutions like Harvard University, the Starmus Festival, and the American Museum of Natural History

In recognition of his contributions to astronomy, the International Astronomical Union named asteroid 3617 Eicher in his honor in 1990 .

Mark Zastrow – Editor in Chief

Mark got his bachelor’s degree in astrophysics from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees in astronomy and science journalism from Boston University. At BU, he researched topics ranging from Jupiter’s magnetosphere and Enceladus’ plume to stellar activity on M dwarfs and the migration of hot Jupiters. Before joining Astronomy, he was a freelance science reporter in Seoul, where he covered stories including AlphaGo’s historic victory, air pollution, dog cloning, research misconduct, the search for axions, and the MERS and COVID-19 outbreaks. He was a regular contributor to tbs eFM, Korea’s largest English-language radio station, and editor of a South Korean politics newsletter from Korea Exposé. Mark is a licensed pilot, though these days, you’ll likely find him in his free time hiked out on his Laser sailboat on Lake Michigan or cheering on his beloved Indy cars at Road America.

Itinerary

Day 1 – January 19, 2028Arrival in Quito and Evening in the Historic City

You arrive in Quito, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Andes, at an altitude of more than 9,000 feet above sea level. After meeting your private transfer, you are driven through Ecuador’s capital toward your hotel, passing neighborhoods that blend colonial architecture with modern city life. Upon check-in, the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure, allowing time to rest, acclimate to the altitude, and relax. In the evening, you enjoy your first introduction to Quito’s beautifully preserved historic center. Softly illuminated plazas such as Independence Square, Santo Domingo, and San Francisco create a welcoming atmosphere. Overnight stay in Quito.  JW Marriott Hotel or Swisshotel.

Day 2 – January 20, 2028Quito’s Historic Treasures and Panecillo Views (Breakfast, Lunch,Dinner )

After breakfast at your hotel, the day begins with a guided exploration of Quito’s UNESCO-listed historic center, one of the best-preserved colonial districts in the Americas. You stroll through Independence Square, framed by the Presidential Palace, Metropolitan Cathedral, and Archbishop’s Palace, and continue to La Compañía de Jesús, renowned for its extraordinary gold-leaf Baroque interior. The walk continues to the Basilica del Voto Nacional, where panoramic views of the city and surrounding volcanoes await those who choose to climb its towers. Lunch is enjoyed in the Old Town before ascending to El Panecillo, crowned by the iconic winged Virgin of Quito, offering sweeping views across the city and Andean landscape. Later, you explore La Ronda, a charming colonial street filled with artisans, musicians, and cafés. Dinner is served in the historic district, followed by an overnight stay in Quito. Day 3 – January 21, 2028 Middle of the World and the High Andes (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Following breakfast, you depart Quito for a scenic drive north to Mitad del Mundo, the monument marking the equatorial line. Here, you explore the site and enjoy the unique experience of standing between two hemispheres. A visit to the nearby Intiñan Museum offers hands-on demonstrations and insight into indigenous cultures connected to the equator. After lunch, you return toward the city to board the TelefériQo cable car, ascending the slopes of Pichincha Volcano into the high Andes. From the summit, you take in expansive views of Quito below and the surrounding páramo landscape. In the late afternoon, you descend back into the city. Day 4 – January 22, 2028 Quito to San Cristóbal Island and Kicker Rock (Breakfast, Dinner)

After breakfast, you are transferred to Quito International Airport for a private charter flight to San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos. ( Flight details will be provided ) Upon arrival, you proceed with embarkation and settle into your cabin aboard Silver Origin. Lunch is served onboard as the expedition begins. In the afternoon, the ship navigates toward Kicker Rock, one of the most dramatic geological formations in the Galápagos, rising sharply from the ocean and hosting abundant seabird and marine life. Snorkeling and wildlife viewing opportunities are available, conditions permitting. Dinner is served onboard, followed by overnight navigation aboard Silver Origin.

Day 5 – January 23, 2028Bartolomé Island and Buccaneer Cove (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

An early arrival at Bartolomé Island offers the opportunity to hike to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Pinnacle Rock or snorkel along the shoreline, where penguins, sea turtles, and reef fish are often encountered. Breakfast and lunch are served onboard. In the afternoon, the ship continues to Buccaneer Cove on Santiago Island, a historic anchorage once used by pirates and whalers. Zodiac cruising and snorkeling reveal dramatic cliffs, sea caves, and diverse wildlife. Dinner is served onboard, with overnight sailing aboard Silver Origin.

Day 6 – January 24, 2028 Punta Vicente Roca, Bolívar Channel, and Punta Espinoza (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Breakfast is served before morning activities at Punta Vicente Roca on Isabela Island, known for its cold, nutrient-rich waters and exceptional marine biodiversity. Guests explore by Zodiac and snorkel, with possible sightings of flightless cormorants and sea lions. Lunch is enjoyed onboard during scenic navigation through the Bolívar Channel, where marine mammals are occasionally seen. In the afternoon, you land at Punta Espinoza on Fernandina Island, one of the most pristine ecosystems in the Galápagos, home to dense marine iguana colonies and striking volcanic landscapes. Dinner and overnight are aboard Silver Origin.

Day 7 – January 25, 2028 Tagus Cove and Elizabeth Bay (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

The day begins with breakfast before exploration of Tagus Cove on Isabela Island, a historic volcanic inlet offering Zodiac cruising, hiking, and panoramic views. Lunch is served onboard as the ship sails to Elizabeth Bay, a tranquil mangrove ecosystem accessible only by Zodiac. The afternoon is dedicated to wildlife observation, with frequent sightings of turtles, rays, pelicans, and coastal birds. Dinner and overnight are aboard Silver Origin.

Day 8 – January 26, 2028Annular Solar Eclipse Day – Floreana Island: Post Office Bay, Champion Islet, and Punta Cormorant (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

This day is highlighted by the rare and extraordinary annular solar eclipse, one of the key astronomical events of the voyage. After breakfast, the ship positions itself in the Floreana Island area, which lies directly within the path of annularity. Eclipse observation will take place from a carefully selected open viewing area near Punta Cormorant, where unobstructed horizons and minimal light interference provide optimal conditions.

The eclipse is expected to begin during the mid-morning hours, with the moon gradually moving across the sun. At maximum annularity, the sun will appear as a dramatic “ring of fire”, a phenomenon visible only within a narrow geographic path. Exact timing and final positioning will be confirmed and announced onboard by the expedition team to ensure the best possible viewing experience. Certified eclipse glasses will be provided, and staff will be available to guide guests throughout the event.

Following the eclipse observation, the day’s program continues with a visit to Post Office Bay, where guests may take part in the historic postcard tradition dating back to the whaling era. The voyage then proceeds to Champion Islet, an important habitat for the endangered Floreana mockingbird and an excellent snorkeling site with abundant marine life. Lunch is served onboard. In the afternoon, guests explore Punta Cormorant, known for its distinctive green-sand beach, flamingo lagoon, and rich coastal ecosystem. Dinner is served onboard, followed by overnight navigation aboard Silver Origin.

Day 9 – January 27, 2028 Santa Cruz Highlands and Charles Darwin Breeding Center (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Following breakfast, you disembark on Santa Cruz Island for a visit to the lush highlands, where giant tortoises roam freely in their natural habitat. Lunch is enjoyed before visiting the Charles Darwin Research Station Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, providing insight into conservation efforts and endemic species protection. Dinner and overnight are aboard Silver Origin.

Day 10 – January 28, 2028Cerro Dragón, Guy Fawkes, and Bowditch Bay (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Breakfast is served before landing at Cerro Dragón, also known as Dragon Hill, featuring arid landscapes, land iguanas, and a saline lagoon frequented by flamingos. Lunch is served onboard before snorkeling and Zodiac cruising at Guy Fawkes Islet, known for vibrant marine life. The afternoon is spent at Bowditch Bay, a secluded anchorage ideal for swimming and relaxation. Dinner and the final overnight are aboard Silver Origin.

Day 11 – January 29, 2028 San Cristóbal Island and Charter Flight to Quito (Breakfast)

After breakfast, the cruise concludes with disembarkation on San Cristóbal Island. You are transferred to the airport for a private charter flight operated by Avianca, departing at 11:20 a.m. and arriving at Quito International Airport at 2:20 p.m. We recommend booking an evening return flight to the United States on the same day, as several international carriers offer evening departures. Guests choosing to extend their stay in Ecuador will be transferred from the airport to their hotel in Quito. This marks the conclusion of your Galápagos expedition aboard Silver Origin.

Day 11 – January 29, 2028 (OPTIONAL POST-TOUR EXTENSION)Arrival in Quito (Dinner) (Ecuador Cultural Highlands Extension: Quito , Otavalo & Magdalena Community)

Following your arrival in Quito after the Galápagos program, you are met and transferred to your hotel in the historic heart of the city. You check in at Casa Gangotena, an elegant luxury boutique hotel overlooking Plaza San Francisco, ideally located for a refined introduction to Quito’s Old Town. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner is included this evening, either at the hotel or a selected local restaurant. Overnight at Casa Gangotena, Quito.

Day 12 – January 30, 2028Quito to Otavalo and Andean Valleys (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

After breakfast at the hotel, depart Quito and travel north through the scenic Andean highlands, passing the fertile valleys of Guayllabamba and Cayambe, known for agriculture, dairy traditions, and rose plantations. Lunch is included en route. In the afternoon, arrive in the Otavalo region, renowned for its strong indigenous heritage and artisan culture. After time to explore the town and surroundings, you check in to your hotel. Dinner is included at the property. Overnight in the Otavalo area at Hotel Otavalo by Art Hotels.

Day 13 – January 31, 2028Otavalo Market, Artisan Villages, and Karanki Magdalena Community (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Following breakfast, the morning is dedicated to visiting the famous Otavalo Market, South America’s most iconic indigenous craft bazaar, where vibrant textiles and handwoven goods reflect centuries-old traditions. You continue to nearby artisan villages such as Peguche and Cotacachi, known for weaving, musical instruments, and leather craftsmanship. Lunch is included during the excursion. In the afternoon, travel toward the slopes of Imbabura Volcano to the Karanki Magdalena Community. Upon arrival, you are welcomed by local hosts and enjoy an authentic cultural exchange. Day 14 – February 1, 2028 Magdalena Community and Return to Quito (Breakfast, Lunch – No Dinner)

Lunch is included before departing for the return journey to Quito. Upon arrival, you check in once again at Casa Gangotena.
