David Eicher – Editor Emeritus

 

David John Eicher (born August 7, 1961, in Oxford, Ohio) is a prominent American editor, author, and science communicator, best known for his leadership in the field of astronomy.

Eicher developed a passion for astronomy during his teenage years. At the age of 15, he founded Deep Sky Monthly, a magazine dedicated to deep sky observing, which laid the foundation for his future career in science communication. He pursued his higher education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

In 1982, Eicher began his professional journey with Astronomy magazine as an assistant editor. Over the years, he advanced through various editorial roles, ultimately becoming the editor-in-chief in 2002 . Under his leadership, the magazine has continued to be a leading publication for astronomy enthusiasts worldwide.

Eicher has authored, coauthored, or edited over 20 books on astronomy and science, including notable titles such as The New Cosmos: Answering Astronomy’s Big Questions, Comets! Visitors from Deep Space, and Mission Moon. He is also known for his engaging presentations and has spoken at institutions like Harvard University, the Starmus Festival, and the American Museum of Natural History

In recognition of his contributions to astronomy, the International Astronomical Union named asteroid 3617 Eicher in his honor in 1990 .

Mark Zastrow – Editor in Chief

Mark got his bachelor’s degree in astrophysics from the University of Minnesota and master’s degrees in astronomy and science journalism from Boston University. At BU, he researched topics ranging from Jupiter’s magnetosphere and Enceladus’ plume to stellar activity on M dwarfs and the migration of hot Jupiters. Before joining Astronomy, he was a freelance science reporter in Seoul, where he covered stories including AlphaGo’s historic victory, air pollution, dog cloning, research misconduct, the search for axions, and the MERS and COVID-19 outbreaks. He was a regular contributor to tbs eFM, Korea’s largest English-language radio station, and editor of a South Korean politics newsletter from Korea Exposé. Mark is a licensed pilot, though these days, you’ll likely find him in his free time hiked out on his Laser sailboat on Lake Michigan or cheering on his beloved Indy cars at Road America.

Jeff Bennett – Astrophysicist, Author & Educator

Astrophysicist, author, and educator Jeff Bennett has dedicated his career to advancing math and science education. He has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school, including more than 50 college courses in astronomy, physics, mathematics, and education.

He is the lead author of bestselling college textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics, as well as critically acclaimed books for educators and the public on subjects including Einstein’s theory of relativity, the search for extraterrestrial life, global warming, the scale of the universe, and effective math and science teaching.

Jeff is also the author of seven award-winning science books for children, all of which have been launched to the International Space Station for “Story Time From Space.” His work reflects a lifelong commitment to making complex scientific ideas accessible, engaging, and meaningful for audiences of all ages.

His career highlights include serving for two years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA Headquarters, proposing and co-leading the development of the Colorado Scale Model Solar System on the CU-Boulder campus and the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., creating the free Totality app for learning about solar eclipses, and developing a free online digital textbook for middle school Earth and Space Science.

Among his honors, Jeff is a recipient of the American Institute of Physics Science Communication Award and the Klopsteg Memorial Award for education from the American Association of Physics Teachers.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Sunday, July 16, 2028Arrival in Sydney

Upon arrival at Sydney International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your private Eclipse Traveler representative. Assistance is provided with luggage before a comfortable private transfer to your luxury hotel overlooking Sydney Harbour.

No activities are scheduled today, allowing you time to rest, recover from international travel, and adjust to the time zone. You may choose to relax at the hotel, enjoy the harbor views, or dine at one of Sydney’s renowned restaurants at your own pace.

Day 2 – Monday, July 17, 2028Sydney Panoramic City Tour & Harbour Lunch Cruise

After breakfast, meet your private driver and professional guide for a relaxed, panoramic introduction to Sydney. The tour is conducted primarily as a scenic drive, minimizing walking while maximizing views and comfort.

Highlights include:

· The historic Rocks district

· Circular Quay with views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge

· A short, easy stop at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, offering one of Sydney’s most iconic photo opportunities on flat, paved ground

Late morning, you will board a Sydney Harbour lunch cruise, featuring reserved seating, full onboard facilities, and uninterrupted views of the city skyline from the water. Lunch is served onboard in a relaxed setting.

Following the cruise, return directly to your hotel for rest and leisure.

Day 3 – Tuesday, July 18, 2028Blue Mountains Scenic Experience

After breakfast, depart Sydney by private vehicle for a full-day, senior-friendly excursion to the Blue Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage region known for its dramatic landscapes and eucalyptus forests.

The journey is unhurried, with scenic commentary along the way. At Echo Point, enjoy views of the famous Three Sisters rock formation from an easily accessible lookout with seating and paved paths—no hiking required.

Lunch is enjoyed at a comfortable mountain lodge or restaurant with step-free access. After lunch, a gentle scenic drive showcases additional viewpoints before returning to Sydney in the mid-afternoon.

The remainder of the day is free for relaxation.

Day 7 – Saturday, July 22, 2028Bigge Island Region – TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

The defining moment of the journey.

Silver Cloud will be expertly positioned within the path of totality near Bigge Island, far from artificial light and atmospheric interference. Earlier in the day, the expedition team and astronomers provide clear explanations of the eclipse phases and safety guidance. Certified eclipse glasses are distributed to all guests.

As the moon gradually obscures the sun, daylight will noticeably dim, temperatures may drop, and the surrounding environment may change. At the moment of totality, the sun’s corona becomes visible—an awe-inspiring spectacle lasting several minutes.

Viewing is available from open decks and designated observation areas, with seating and staff assistance throughout. Following the eclipse, guests may reflect, photograph, and discuss the experience with the expert team.

Day 8 – Sunday, July 23, 2028Buccaneer Archipelago

After the eclipse, the voyage continues into the spectacular Buccaneer Archipelago. This region features rugged islands, narrow channels, and some of the largest tidal movements on Earth.

Scenic cruising is complemented by optional Zodiac excursions for those who wish to explore closer to shore. Participation is entirely optional.

All cancellations must be submitted in writing to Eclipse Traveler. The effective date of cancellation is the date written notice is received.
